October 2023

Trout Unlimited, along with the US Forest Service and other partners, reached an eight-year, $10 million agreement to restore Colorado fish habitats affected by 2020 fires.

In 2020, the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests were rocked by the two largest wildfires in Colorado’s history – Cameron Peak and East Troublesome – and a third substantial fire in the Williams Fork watershed. While work has been ongoing ever since to help stabilize the areas for safety and watershed protection, much remains to be done as the Forest continues on its road to recovery. And for aquatic-related recovery efforts – such as on-the-ground watershed restoration and replacement of undersized (and not fish-friendly) road crossings – Trout Unlimited in Colorado will be a crucial partner in those recovery efforts moving forward.

The Forest Service approached us about entering into a partnership agreement with them to conduct $10 million in restoration work over the next several years – and TU is pleased and excited by the chance to collaborate with the Forest on this vital work for our watersheds, trout, and communities. In the years ahead, we will work to leverage the Forest’s federal fire recovery dollars with other government and private sector funding partners and to bring both TU’s staff expertise and the excellent sweat equity of our volunteers to bear on needed restoration projects.
