Rare cutthroat rescued from fire and now back home
Colorado Parks and Wildlife stocked some genetically unique cutthroat trout, currently being referred to as the Hayden Creek cutthroat, into remote creeks high on Pikes Peak after they were rescued from the Hayden Pass Fire in 2016 that charred 16,754 acres across the Hayden Creek and Big Cottonwood Creek drainages.
CPW removed 158 cutthroat trout from the stream (the only survivors), took them to the Roaring Judy Hatchery isolation facility near Crested Butte and spawned the fish the following spring. Now, CPW is stocking them into several streams within the Arkansas Basin to ensure these unique cutthroat genes survive. (photo courtesy of CPW)
EPA announces reinstatement of Clean Water Act protections for Bristol Bay, Alaska watershed
Following the ninth circuit ruling in favor of Trout Unlimited, the EPA moved to vacate the unlawful 2019 decision to withdraw the proposed determination for Bristol Bay and reinstated longstanding proposed protections.
These proposed protections would limit the amount of waste water and mine waste discharge that could be released in to Waters of the United States in the Bristol Bay region. The announcement comes in the wake of a lawsuit brought by Trout Unlimited against the withdrawal decision and recent ruling in favor of TU by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals. TU looks forward to working with the EPA to finalize these protections, which are critical to protecting Bristol Bay’s world-class fisheries.

*New* JOIN THE TEAM: We are hiring a Youth Education Coordinator!
CTU seeks an energetic, self-starter with strong communications and interpersonal skills to manage the Headwaters Youth Program statewide. The successful candidate will work with our 24 local chapters and other education partners to engage young people from elementary school through college-age groups with watershed education, conservation, and angling.
The inaugural Flylords/Trout Unlimited Trout Week just wrapped up and in case you missed some of the festivities, TU has a small playlist of videos you can check out below. In addition, we can all keep the story going by increasing our personal conservation efforts on local waters, connecting more with TU opportunities and initiatives online and across the country and in turn making every week 'Trout Week'.
Five Flies for October - Fly Fishing the Colorado River
It's October and that means fall is here. Temps are dropping and the focus is on streamers and droppers for this month in the Rockies. Trouts Fly Fishing brings you down the Colorado River and to catch a couple feisty freestone fish looking to put on some pounds before winter hits.
The scenery is typically gorgeous and while the weather can be iffy, putting on a hoody for the first time of the year always feels good. Coffee is just a touch more delicious, and there can be sections of river where you might not see anyone for days. Fall is where it's at.
The new Fall 2021 issue of High Country Angler e-zine is here! Featuring the CTU “Year in Review” for FY21 alongside a recap of this summer's CTU youth programming and your favorite regular columns:
