Are you or somebody you know interested in trout fishing, but you aren’t sure where to start? Join Trout Unlimited and Backcountry Hunters and Anglers in our R.I.S.E program (Recruit. Inspire. Sustain. Empower.), an educational series designed to empower new and veteran anglers to get out on the water. Register for the FREE “Introduction to Trout Fishing” virtual event. Over three Friday evenings in May, we will cover everything an angler needs to know in order to gear up and find success in pursuit of America’s favorite coldwater fish.

This program is absolutely free, open to anyone of any age, and families are encouraged to join together. Whether you are completely new to fishing, or you are an experienced angler looking for a new way to test your skills, this program will have something for you.

Trout Unlimited Fights Water Quality Rollback

For nearly 50 years, the Clean Water Act has been a tool for improving the quality of waters in Colorado and nationwide – reducing degradation from discharges of pollution into our waterways. Unfortunately, the Colorado Water Quality Control Commission is now considering a rollback of its anti-degradation rules that could allow for increased pollution discharges into many Colorado waters. Urban rivers like the South Platte in Denver or Arkansas in Pueblo would be especially at risk - but mountain streams could also see their protections weakened. This is a step backwards for our water quality!

 The Keep Colorado Wild Pass

More than ever this past year, we've seen how important Colorado's great outdoors is in providing a place to relax, reconnect, and revive through outdoor recreation from angling to camping to hiking. With more and more Coloradans enjoying Colorado's State Parks, additional funding opportunities are needed to keep up with the high demand that our outdoor spaces are experiencing. The new pass will provide access to Colorado's 42 state parks, cost no more than $40 and include a clear option for registrants to choose not to purchase the pass. In addition, the new revenue will ensure sufficient staffing and resources to manage and conserve Colorado’s 42 existing state parks. So, please take action now and ask your State Senator to support HB21-249 - the Keep Colorado Wild Pass!

The fishing outlook for May from Cutthroat Anglers

Throughout May, fish will continue holding in the deeper pools and runs, but with an increase in flows fish will be seeking out slower water closer to the banks of the river. With that in mind, there's no need to wade deep and fish the middle of the river. Continue reading to see what flies are recommended for stillwaters and rivers during this time.

Reconnecting the Colorado River to enhance resiliency and fishing

The Colorado River Connectivity Channel is a plan to reroute the river around the reservoir to reestablish its natural channel to help eliminate the reservoir’s negative impacts.
