VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES COMING UP

Summer in Colorado is a great time to fish - and to volunteer! Some upcoming volunteer opportunities include:

  • Poudre River Headwaters Project Ambassadors - help with public outreach on the Greenback cutthroat restoration efforts in the Poudre headwaters. Volunteer trainings coming up June 9 and June 29 in Ft. Collins. Ambassadors are asked to volunteer at least 12 hours over the summer. Learn more and sign up here.
  • STREAM Keepers and STREAM Girls. Working with Girl Scouts of Colorado and other partners serving diverse youth audiences, help introduce kids to watershed science and fishing - experiencing rivers through the eyes of a scientist, an artist and an angler. Events are scheduled through summer and early fall, with volunteer training available later in summer. Learn more here.
  • Trail Maintenace - the Hartsel Easy Access Recreation Trail (HEART) provides angling access in South Park to anglers with limited mobility. June 18 will be the annual maintenance day with Cherry Creek Anglers; learn more here.

SAN LUIS VALLEY WATER SAFE - FOR NOW

The misleadingly named "Renewable Water Resources" proposal is taking aim at already overtapped San Luis Valley groundwater for export to the Southern Front Range - putting the environment and rural communities at risk. Fortunately, their efforts have been set back as their request for funding from Douglas County to advance the project was rejected by the County Commission on a 2-1 vote. Read more.

CHECK OUT THE SPRING ISSUE OF HIGH COUNTRY ANGLER

You can click through to view or download the Spring edition of High Country Angler e-zine!  This issue includes a double-dose of Landon Mayer on responsible fishing during the spawning season and visiting Wyoming's Powder River, an update on TU's efforts to secure Good Sam legislation to promote abandoned mine cleanups, fly selection tips from biologist Peter Stitcher, and more!

FEATURED PARTNER:  FREESTONE AQUATICS

Freestone Aquatics is a stream restoration and fisheries consulting firm, with a long track record of successful restoration work on public and private lands, on waters as varied as the Upper Colorado and the North Fork South Platte. Their commitment to conservation also extends to philanthropy, with generous matching grant support of Colorado TU helping to leverage additional donations on Colorado Gives day both in 2020 and 2021. They also contributed in-kind on top of their contracted work for the successful Learning by Doing restoration project at Fraser Flats - check out this video sharing their work there.
