December 2020

As we approach the end of a year unlike any we have ever experienced, two things have become clear to all of us at Colorado Trout Unlimited.

1) With more and more people enjoying the healthy benefits of outdoor recreation, the rivers and watersheds we work to conserve are as important as ever.

2) Even as headlines focus on divides within our country, we can make the greatest difference when we all work together.

That’s why we are doubling down on our model of collaborative, grassroots conservation. Together, we will build healthier rivers, protect cold, clean water and connect our communities around conservation. Your generous year-end gift – today – will help us continue to advance the projects and partnerships that benefit Colorado’s watersheds and wild places. We have also lined up a range of special Colorado TU gifts for different levels of donations, including gift cards for use with local Colorado fly shops, in appreciation of your generous support. You can make a difference for Colorado's coldwater fisheries and their watersheds, at all levels of giving. Thank you!

The long fought battle for Bristol Bay - a win for the fish, people, and environment

Pebble Mine stopped

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers denied the key permit for the proposed Pebble Mine and announced that it found the proposed Pebble mine would cause significant degradation to the Bristol Bay region

That’s right. After nearly two decades of fighting this mine, we’re so very pleased to report that Pebble is stopped in its tracks. Finally.

Support local businesses that value healthy rivers

As 2020 comes to a close, we want to take this moment to thank our business partners.  We realize this has been an incredibly difficult year for so many and are so appreciative of the current and past support we have received from our corporate partners big and small!  Your ongoing support provides critical funds for our work around the state, helps us to share the Colorado TU story with those near and far, and brings us together under the shared mission of healthy rivers and fisheries.  Thank you to our Protect Our Rivers Business Partners who provide annual contributions in support of Colorado TU’s projects and programs!  Thank you to our Gala sponsors and auction donors who help to make our annual event such a huge success year after year!  Thank you to our fly shop and outfitter partners (mapped below) who are committed to the health of their local watersheds!  As you consider where to spend your holiday dollars, we encourage you to shop local and to support the businesses who support Colorado TU and the rivers and fishing we all love!

THANK YOU - you made this Colorado Gives Day the best one yet!

We are humbled by and so appreciative of the amazing support we received on Colorado Gives Day this year. We want to give a big thank you to Freestone Aquatics and Anglers All for their matches that helped us to raise even more funds for our work around the state! This has been a challenging year for so many, and we are so grateful for your support of our work. We look forward to 2021, to seeing the light at the end of this pandemic, and to continuing our coldwater conservation work in Colorado. Thank you!

STREAM Girls builds confidence in STEM and the outdoors despite COVID

The Girl Scout motto is “Be prepared.” I feel like there is no better motto for 2020. Maybe it should be something like, “Be prepared for a bunch of stuff you thought you could never be prepared for but actually we just have to be flexible and adapt!” That sounds about right.

Tension is the key to every cast

“Every good cast begins with tension,” my fishing buddy explained. “If you don’t have tension, you really can’t cast much at all.”

Big Win for Responsible Oil and Gas Development

As the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission passed new regulations, Colorado TU and National TU worked in harmony to secure groundbreaking changes for protecting aquatic and riparian habitat.

Bone-cold fishing in the face of winter
